Abstract: Andrea Fraser’s art is critical. But so is Cosima von Bonin’s. The lecture analyzes how both artists partake in the same social and cultural field of the1980s—90s that defines art as critical discourse. In short, a “critical position” becomes the core aim of discourse – in practice as in theory; a discourse both artists partake in. Von Bonin does so by looking into the intrinsic mechanisms, debating social and cultural conditions, or rather dependencies. Fraser’s viewpoint is bound outwards in order to claim societal significance. Where the two – artistically diverging – strategies unite is in their critical stance against the field of art and their own participation. The lecture argues for a plurality of modes of current critical art practice, united by thematic concerns.

Dr Kristina Schrei studied Art History and Museum Studies at New York University and the University of Vienna, and completed her PhD at the University of Applied Arts, Vienna, Austria. Her thesis was titled “Trapped in our own field? Andrea Fraser and Cosima von Bonin resist”; her research topic questioning the extent to which contemporary art can serve as a platform for critique, with a particular focus on its relevance to society. Most recently, she curated the exhibition “Andreas Mühe. Hagiographie Biorobotica”, an exhibition in three parts, at St. Matthäus Kirche, Berlin. She is currently preparing the exhibition “Pauline Curnier Jardin. Fat to Ashes” at Hamburger Bahnhof – Museum für Gegenwart – Berlin, as well as the group show “Sweet Home, Alone” at Schloss Kummerow, Germany. Kristina Schrei is curator at Hamburger Bahnhof – Museum für Gegenwart – Berlin and lives in Berlin.
