The Faculty of Painting and Drawing of the Magdalena Abakanowicz University of the Arts Poznan is delighted to announce the lecture of Warren Neidich Indeterminacy, Art and the Brain Without Organs

Artistic interventions attuned to chance, indeterminacy and unpredictability, e.g. those used by Duchamp in his 1915-23 Large Glass, or the works of the Fluxus group, play havoc with the cultural milieu’s gestalts, affordances and attention networks. Using Activist Neuroaesthetics as a framework I want to understand how such artistic interventions arbitrate between the material conditions of the mutating cultural habitus (what I call the extra-cranial brain) and the material architecture of the intra cranial brain housed in the bony carapace of the skull.
We will explore the emancipatory political consequences of indeterminacy to understand the links between the brain’s neural variation and its plasticity, and to understand how and why Brain without Organs (like Deleuze’s Body without Organs) rejects the discipline of the organization of the organism.  Especially important for this presentation will be my video performative works, Untuning Three Steinway Pianos, Cruise and Scoring the Tweets.

Warren Neidich is a Los Angeles based artist whose intersectional practice combines a multidisciplinary and multi media approach to create cross pollinating conceptual text-based works that reflect upon situations at the border zone of art, science and social justice. He has studied art, neuroscience, medicine and architecture.  Selected awards received include Hauptstadtkulturfond and Siftung Kunstfond Neustart Kulture prizes, 2020, Berlin, the Katalogforderung prize, 2017, Berlin  Fulbright Scholar Program Award, 2013 and 2011, The MacDowell Foundation Studio Grant, 2011 and 1999,  The Vilem Flusser Theory Award, Transmediale, 2010, the British\ Academy Fellowship, 2005, AHRB/ACE  Arts and Science Research Fellowship, 2004 and the Madrid Abierto Public Sculpture Award, 2004. In 2021 he will exhibit at the Kunstmuseum Wolfsberg, Haus der Kunst, Munich, Kunsthalle Nurnberg and the Sonsbeek Quadrianniel, Arnheim, The Netherlands.  In 2019 his hanging neon sculpture Pizzagate Neon (2018), was on display at the Venice Biennial 2019.  Selected one person and group exhibitions include the Whitney Museum of American Art, Los Angeles County Museum of Art, The Walker Art Center, PS1 MOMA, MIT List Visual Art Center, Haus Der Kulturen der Welt, Berlin, the Ludwig Museum Cologne, The ZKM Karlsruhe and the ICA London. His projects have appeared in Artforum, The New York Times, Art in America, Time Out, Hyperallergic, Time Magazine, 032c, Kunstforum International, The New Yorker, New York Magazine and the LA Times.
 
He is founder and director of the Saas-Fee Summer Institute of Art (2015 2021), and has been a visiting lecturer at the departments of art at Goldsmiths College London, Carnegie Melon, Brown University, GSD Harvard University, Columbia University, Princeton University, Southern California Institute of Architecture, UCLA, La Sorbonne Paris, University of Oxford, TU Delft School of Architecture, Architectural Association, Sci-Arc and Cambridge University, UK.

He is American editor of Archive Books and author of over 20 books. His recent books include The Glossary of Cognitive Activism, Archive Books, Berlin, was reviewed in the Los Angeles Review of Books and his first reader in Activist Neuroaesthetics is forthcoming in the Summer of 2021.

The series of on-line lectures is dedicated to encounter with the  critical thought of the most renowned contemporary theoreticians, art critics, curators and artists. At the time of the pandemic solitary confinement, we believe that with our effort, the forced physical distance can be reshaped into the advantage of the greater proximity in exchange of ideas.
