The works presented during the exhibition are multithreaded answers to the slogans and tasks proposed during several months of classes. Thus, there are works of a character referring to the search within the framework of classical painting, but also forms that are closer to broadly understood modern art. Referring to the program content that was implemented during the courses, people participating in UATA classes, painting section, were familiarized with all instruments of artistic creation, as well as developed issues related to nature, landscape, architecture. Various techniques and technologies were also discussed during the classes. A number of experiments were carried out, but also, during the meetings, there was time for conversations, studies and debates among others about composition, colors, space, illusion, perspective and contrast, as well as about art, in accordance with theoretical considerations about painting and painters.

The exhibition is a review of works created in the academic year 2022/2023. The painting section was led by lecturers: Marta Węglińska, Natalia Czarcińska and Aleksander Radziszewski.

As part of the classes, the participants implemented a program based on working with various techniques such as: pencil, charcoal, pen and ink, pastels, collage. And close oneself in a cocoon of silence
Let the thoughts circulate
Around the movement of your hand
Conjuring beauty.
Teresa Maciejewska – Lebeau

The exhibition presents icons that were created in the studio of the Iconwriting section at the University of the Third Age in the academic year 2022/2023. The assumption of this section’s work is to introduce workshop participants to the world of icons from the Byzantine-Slavic circle. This specific immersion is achieved by familiarizing students with the technique of the old masters and the medieval way of depicting theological content transferred to icons. Slowly discovered, a specific color and theme code allows you to appreciate the richness contained in the icons; understand the rules that have been binding icon writers for centuries. This is the starting point for working on creating an icon. This multi-stage process requires patience, accuracy and precision from the writer (iconographer), because technical proficiency determines the beauty of the final effect. The next stages, from priming the board, through applying the drawing, gilding and finally applying colors, are also stages on the way of spiritual development and internal work on yourself, overcoming impatience and learning humility by acquiring individual technical skills. The icons that make up the exhibition were written in accordance with the rules of the traditional egg tempera technique, which consists in preparing paints from natural pigments (earth, mineral and plant) with the addition of water emulsion and chicken yolk as a binder.

The presented works are mostly imitations of icons of the old masters, mainly from the 15th and 16th centuries, which are grouped thematically as follows:

֎ The cycle of Deesis icons, the so-called Intercessors, with the central figure of Christ on the throne, modeled on Lemko icons from the village of Waniwka. The originals come from the 15th century. and are in the A. Szeptycki National Museum in Lviv.

֎ Icons of the Holy Trinity modeled on the icon of A. Rublev. Original from the 15th century, dim. 142×114cm, is located in the Cathedral of the Troitsko-Sergeev Lavra in the city of Sergiev Posad, Russia.

֎ Icon of Our Lady of Petrovsky from the 16th century. The original is placed in the Kremlin in Moscow. Let pure and bright colors, clarity of drawing and composition allow to contemplate the timeless, everlasting, transcendent beauty to which the icon is an open window. A record of personal reflection on the process of writing the icon are the verses at the top, written by one of the participants of the workshop.
