Volha Arkhipava | Abstractionism in Belarusian art

The lecture will be dedicated to abstractionism and how this trend was manifested in the work of various generations of artists throughout the 20th century. In Belarus, non-figurative art, its development and history have several important stages. During the lecture, we will try to analyze different worldviews in the understanding of “abstraction” and its use in visual and conceptual arts.

Volha Arkhipava i san art critic and cultural expert from Belarus. She studied at the Belarusian State University of Culture, majoring in Culturology. From 1998 to 2022 she worked at the National Art Museum of the Republic of Belarus as a research employee of the Belarusian department of 20th-21st century art. In 2020, she was a member of the initiative group at the headquarters of Viktor Babaryka’s campaign. Main scientific topics: artistic associations of Belarus; Belarusian avant-garde of the 1980s and 1990s (author of the belavangard.by portal in 2012–2015, preparation of materials for the kalektar.org portal); Belarusian abstractionism; project “Jozef Drozdowicz’s Universe”, studied the biographies of 20th century artists and their works, curated over 50 exhibitions at the National Art Museum of the Republic of Belarus.
