“A Beast of no Burden” is a project referring to the loss of connection with nature, inspired by the landscape of northern Thailand. The titular “beast of no burden” is a water buffalo (domestic ox), a draft animal that once dominated the rural landscapes of many Southeast Asian countries. The last few decades have brought dynamic agricultural mechanization, which in turn has wiped out these animals from the rural landscape.
The axis of the project is a hand-made floor consisting of ceramic tiles decorated with water buffalo hoof prints. In a region where ceramics are an important element of interior design, the “A beast of no Burden” project tries to symbolically evoke the presence of this animal in everyday life.
The work was created in collaboration with Slow Hands Studio (Kritchnun Srirakit) & Rajamangala University of Technology Lanna in Chiang Mai during an artist residency with Ne’-Na Contemporary Artspace (curated by Shukit Panmongkol, with the support of Professor Rampat Kothkaew), Chiang Mai 2019/2020.
The exhibition in Chiang Mai was supported by funding from the Adam Mickiewicz Institute.
