We dream of the highest order, a sublime murmur, and we only save obscure fragments.
Philippe Jaccottet
The pale faces of ancient statues, wood plowed with holes, ornaments swollen with rust and geological preparations covered with moss reveal their fleeting and yet powerful nature. It is in their fragility that their strength lies – the unyielding persistence that emerges from the processes of decay and transformation.
Rafał Boettner-Łubowski and Adam Gillert look closely at these objects, exploring the past as a space of the unexpected. Their look, sharpened by contemporary sensitivity and digital tools, reveals non-obvious beauty – quivering, fragmentary, always incomplete. They show an eye gliding over the surface of the past, framing it with the afterimage of a digital flash and a smartphone camera.
RAFAŁ BOETTNER-ŁUBOWSKI (born in 1974) – sculptor and visual artist. In 1994-2000 studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Poznan at the Faculty of Painting, Graphics and Sculpture, and at the Faculty of Art Education. He creates installations, objects and spatial compositions that engage in dialogical and polemical relationships with existing works, attitudes and creative poetics. In his art he also refers to selected possibilities of digital techniques. Very often, the inspiration for his creative expressions is the broadly understood artistic tradition: ancient, modern and 19th century, with which Rafał Boettner-Łubowski corresponds, but also polemicizes in various ways. Currently, he works as a professor at the Faculty of Art Education and Curatiorial Studies of the Magdalena Abakanowicz University of the Arts as head of the Studio of Open Art Interpretations. As a lecturer at the University of the Arts Poznan he is known as Rafał Łubowski. Texts, exhibitions and original scientific presentations are published under the pseudonym Rafał Boettner-Łubowski.
ADAM GILLERT (born in 1989) – deals with easel painting, drawing, and graphics. Studied at Magdalena Abakanowicz University of the Arts Poznan in 2008-2014. Mirosław Pawłowski, specializing in workshop graphics; parallel second-cycle studies at the Faculty of Painting and Drawing in the 11th Painting Studio of prof. Marek Przybyła. In 2016-2019, he completed doctoral studies at Painting and Drawing Faculty of UAP. Doctoral thesis combined with the exhibition ‘Continuity (de)construction’ was defended in 2021. Since 2016, he has been collaborating with prof. Jacek Strzelecki – head of the 1st Drawing Studio of the 1st Drawing Department of painting and Drawing Faulty as an assistant, since 2022 as an assistant professor. He took part in a number of individual and collective exhibitions, both domestic and foreign, and received distinctions in national and international painting and drawing reviews.
