Somewhere in my memory, there was a literary description of a fabric store, where thick, lush textiles filled the space, and color “spilled out” and completed it. Unfortunately, I couldn’t find that passage again, but that’s how it often is with stories and books – sometimes we simply forget them, and the plots and narratives become intertwined. Or perhaps that store just appeared to me in a dream? Either way, I can still picture that place in my imagination, and its character inspired this exhibition.

The exhibition, for which I invited Małgorzata Szymankiewicz, Kinga Popiela, and Natalia Brodacka, is based on a sensual impression. Paintings and textiles fill imagined shelves. The painterly gesture intertwines with spatial thinking, and individual elements engage in harmonious dialogue with one another.
A fabric store is shelves filled with color, which we perceive sensually… not just by looking, but also by touching, testing, comparing. The same thing happens in the gallery. There are works one wants to touch, to feel their texture, to understand their materiality, to experience how they affect us and the space.
The “Fabric Store” exhibition is about the visible and the invisible. About what lies on the surface and what lies beneath, what is revealed and what remains deeply hidden. I am certain that the artists invited to participate are fully aware not only of the gestures they make and the traces they leave behind, but also of the material of the canvas – its weave, weight, the tension of being stretched over a frame or the lack of one. It is a space between painting and artistic textile.
