My Touch is a Touch of a Woman. Ewa Partum placed this sentence on her work in 1971. Next to it, she left the imprint of red lips.
Red lipstick is a clear mark of a woman’s presence, a presence that would come to characterize Partum’s artistic practice over the next fifty years. Her artistic touch is the experience of a woman, attentive and critical, rooted in concrete realities, drawing attention to the surrounding world, to emerging art, and to promises being made.
In the exhibition on view, the trace of a kiss may also be read as a sign of possession, a seal marking the claim to land. This is why next to this work we present a Polish flag created entirely from lipstick imprints. A state marked by a woman’s presence.
These two works frame the entire presentation, in which women’s issues, the political dimension of art, and art itself hold equal weight. The exhibition shows how, through her actions, Ewa Partum used her conscious presence to question both the reality of the world and the reality of art.
