What does it mean to “belong”? To a place, a country, a person, or a memory? In a time when everything accelerates, borders shift, and stability is only temporary, the need for personal rootedness becomes increasingly important.

We can belong not only to places, but also to the relationships we create, fragile yet enduring. It is within them that we grow roots, which do not have to be tied to a specific land, but instead emerge through closeness, memory, and shared experiences. These connections create a sense of security, becoming a shelter that allows us to be ourselves. The idea of such a safe space – essentially a home – thus becomes an important part of identity. Not as a clearly defined place, but as a network of bonds that we create and that, in turn, shape us.

The exhibition Aerial Roots presents objects made of handmade paper, emerging from the need for belonging and the idea of home as a sensitive, shifting, and fragile space. Paper becomes a living medium here, responding to light, air movement, and the presence of the viewer. Delicate structures unfold in space, creating an environment in which the objects appear as temporary, almost breathing organisms, forms that are not permanently anchored in the ground, but instead exist within the process of forming relationships.

The handmade paper used in these works contains natural materials from different parts of the world. Their layering and combination create aerial roots, networks that transcend geographical and symbolic boundaries. Individual fragments come together into a whole and, through their relationships, reveal what was previously invisible: subtle connections between places, people, memory, and experience. It is a fragile, yet enduring process.
